Candlemas:Pagan sabbat held on Feb. 1.

Cantrip:A spell cast by a witch. It is small, quick, and has minimal effects.

Cardinal Points: North, East, South, and West. Symbolized by the circle in magic (which connects the points), the four elements, and the watchtowers.

Cartomancy: This is a divination method that uses standard playing cards. Tarot can be considered as Cartomancy also because it is done with the use of cards.

Catharsis: The release of magickal energies at the height or climax of a ritual. Essentially the use of energy at the catharsis is the crux of the rite, determining whether its outcome will be successful or not.

Cauldron: Linked to witchcraft in the popular mind, this symbolizes the Goddess, the waters of rebirth. A pot used for mixing herbal formulae or as a brazier (fire pot). A feminine symbol of the goddess, also of life, death, and rebirth. This is associated with Cerridwen, a goddess who brewed a magical cauldron from which a single drop was yielded each year. The consumer of her brew would be granted great wisdom. Today her cauldron survives not only in pagan ritual but in the Christian concept of the Holy Grail.

C.E. : Common Era. Synonymous with A.D. but without religious bias.

Censer: A heatproof container in which incense is burned. It is associated with the element air. Often a censer is used during ritual to "cense" an area, generally by moving the censer around the area and especially around the circle as a means of purification.

Centering: Grounding your energy through meditation or other means often before rituals or healing treatments to help harness and direct the balanced energy.

Ceremonial Magic: A highly codified magical tradition based upon Kabbala, the Jewish-Gnostic mystical teachings.

Chakras: Seven major energy vortexes found in the human body. Each is usually associated with a color. They are: crown - white; third-eye - purple; throat - blue; chest - pink or green; navel - yellow; abdomen - orange; groin - red. Smaller vortexes are located in the hands and feet as well.

Chalice: A ritual tool. It represents the female principals of creation. A feminine symbol of the element water. This is used during ritual and once the waters of life which it contains is blessed, it is passed around so that everyone in the coven may bring the Goddess "into" themself.

Channeling: A New Age practice wherein you allow a discarnate entity to "borrow" your body to speak to others either through automatic writing or verbally. Transmission of information or energy from a nonphysical source through humans. These persons called "channels," "channelers," or "mediums" are sometimes in an apparent trance during the communication.

Channelers: ‘Sensitives' who allow spiritual entities to use their bodies and minds as a link between this plane and higher planes of consciousness for the purpose of receiving psychic information or healing energy. Most commonly known as a medium.

Chant: Repetition of magical phrases, syllables, or words to produce a desired effect as well as bring the chanter to a deeper meditative state. See also Mantra.

Chaote: A Chaos magician not actively in practice. Chaplet: A crown for the head usually made of flowers and worn at Beltane.

Charge, The: The traditional Garderian/Alexandrian declaration by the High Priestess in the name of the Goddess.

Charging: The act of empowering an herb stone or other magical object with one's own energies directed towards a magical purpose.

Charms: Charms are also known as Talismans or Amulets. They can do a number of things from protecting the wearer, to banishing fear or greed. Either an amulet or talisman that has been charmed by saying an incantation over it and instilling it with energy for a specific task.

Cheiromancy: Divination based on the examination of the hand, related to palmistry.

Chi: A Chinese term for the all-encompassing universal life force that flows in and around our body. Also called Ki, Prana, Mana and many other names in other belief systems.

Circle: Sacred space wherein all magic is to be worked and all ritual contained. It both holds ritual energy until the witch is ready to release it, and provides protection for the witch. A sphere of magical energies in which Wiccan rituals are usually practiced. The area inside the circle is seen as being sacred ground in which Wicca and their deities may meet. The circle is deconstructed (released, grounded, etc) after use. Often constructed using the athame, along with incence, salt, and water, but methods vary greatly.

Circle of Protection; CoP: See Circle.

Cleansing: Removing negative energies from an object or space. Purification through a ritual bath (often with a handful of sea salt thrown in) or through meditation to cleanse the psyche. Traditionally performed before every ritual.

Collective Unconsciousness: Term used to describe the sentient connection of all living things, past and present. See also Akashic Records.

Coming of Age Ritual: At age 13 for boys, and at the time of a girl's first menses, Pagan children are seen as spiritual adults. The ritual celebrates their new maturity. Generally this is the age when they are permitted membership in covens.

Cone of Power: Psychic energy raised and focused by either an individual or group mind (coven) to achieve a definite purpose. The cone of power is formed when a group or solitary raises energy for a spell or ritual. The energy forms a sort of cone shape and is released into the universe as the spell is carried out and finished. It is different from the magic circle, but it can be weakened if something passes through it like the circle.

Consecration: The act of blessing an object or place by instilling it with positive energy. This is slightly different from cleansing. Consecrating something is to bless an object with holy energies. Like cleansing, consecration instills the object with positive energies, but on a more powerful level.

Corn Dolly: A figure made by plaiting wheat, similar to a poppet. It is symbolic of the fertility, grain, and harvest aspects of the Goddess.

Corn spirit: The spirit of a grain crop, embodied in an entity, person or animal.

Coven: A group of thirteen or fewer witches that work together in an organized fashion for positive magical endeavors or to perform religious ceremonies.

Crone: Aspect of the Goddess represented by the old woman. Symbolized by the waning moon, the carrion crow, the cauldron, the color black. Her Sabbats are Mabon and Samhain. A term of respect used for a witch who has passed menopause or who is over 50-56 years old.

Croning: A rite of passage into being a crone. Cross-Quarter Days: Refers to Sabbats not falling on the solstices or equinox. A term used for the fire sabbats (Samhain, Imbolb, Beltane, Lammas). The most important festivals of the years which form the "cross" in the wheel of the year.
